Cannot Multi-Select in File Explorer on Vista
I was one of the "early adopters" of Vista. Soon after I installed it, my File Explorer windows started doing two strange things.
The chekbox thing was not that big of a deal; it was more of a visual annoyance. I found out later that the checkboxes could be turned on or off via configuration.
The inability to multi-select, however, is a huge burden on the usefullness of the operating system itself. I had tried several suggestions from various blog postings and message boards, but none of them seemed to work. Finally, I stumbled across a post that had a "fix" that worked on my machine. If you have problem with multi-select in Windows Vista, delete the following two registry keys and then reboot your computer.:
- Putting a little checkbox next to highlighted files or folders
- Multi-select did not work with Ctrl+A, Ctrl+Click or Shift+Click

- Open File Explorer
- Pull down the Tools menu
- Select Folder Options...
- Select the View tab
- Uncheck the Use check boxes to select items option
